Siegfried Schott was an active participant in the circle that produced Kundung: Eine zeitschrift fur Kunst, a deluxe art review that was edited by Rosa Schapire and Wilhelm Niemeyer and that was designed by Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, who designed all of the titles and executed woodcuts for some of the poetry published in this Magazine for Art. Rosa Schapire was a close friend of Schmidt-Rottluff and produced the standard catalogue raisonne of his prints. She was also a well-known art historian whose specialty was the artists of Die Brucke and corresponded with Kirchner, Heckel, and especially Schmidt-Rottluff. Niemayer was also an art historian and a supporter of younger artists. Schott contributed 6 woodcuts (one of which—his masterpiece—is illustrated below) and a poem. Later in life, Schott achieved prominence as an Egyptologist, researching the self-representations of Egyptian kings and translating several volumes of ancient Egyptian love poetry. He was the subject of a festschrift on the occasion of his 70th birthday.
