Suzanne Valadon was a Parisian dress-maker's apprentice, a circus-acrobat, and an artist's model in Montmartre, working for Degas, Renoir, and Toulouse-Lautrec among others. She was one of the brightest lights on the social scene until she became pregnant. Taking care of her son, the future painter Maurice Utrillo, left the 18-year old mother less time for society and a need for a new occupation. Having seen some of her drawings, she was encouraged by Degas and Toulouse-Lautrec to become an artist. She began with drawings and prints, working both in lithography and etching. Beginning in 1909, she began working seriously on paintings as well, She became one of the most outstanding women artists in the School of Paris, working until she suffered a stroke and died in 1938.
