Old Master Prints and Drawings
Spaightwood Galleries has a large inventory of old master prints and drawings from the late fifteenth century to Goya (including a complete set of the Caprichos). In the days to come we will be adding links to many of these artists; until then, please email us to inquire about artists whose works you seek. We have nearly 1000 prints and about 50 drawings within this area and will be adding illustrated pages as time permits. We are particularly strong in German and Netherlandish works, but with some very nice works by Italian artists and a number of French artists as well.
German artists whose work is presently available include Heinrich Aldegraver, Hans Sebald Beham, Hans Brosamer, Lucas Cranach, Albrecht Dürer, Lukas Kilian, Alexander Mair, Georg Pencz, Virgil Solis, and several of the monogrammists. We also have an number of 16th-century copies and forgeries of Dürer's works, including a nearly complete set of Marcantonio Raimondi's engravings after Dürer's Small Woodcut Passion.
In addition to Marcantonio, Dürer's prints had a strong influence on the two greatest Netherlandish printmakers of the sixteenth century, Lucas van Leyden and Hendrik Goltzius. Italian Mannerism, brought north by Francis I for the decoration of his palace at Fontainebleau, and traveling about Europe through the medium of prints, has a very strong impact upon the artists located in Antwerp (before its fall into Spanish hands and its sack) to produce art for publications by the great book and print publishers of the late sixteenth century and their decendents, Hieronymous Cock, Philips Galle, Hendrik Goltzius, Christopher Plantin, and Jan Sadeler (who was also an artist and the brother and father of artists). Please be patient with us as we begin digitizing and making web pages: remember more specific information is just a phone call or an email away.
Thanks for your patience.
