The Fall of Icarus (see Henri Matisse: L'Art du Livre [Nice: Musée Matisse, 1986], p. 94). Original color lithograph after a paper cut-out and gouache, 1943. Teriade, the publisher of Verve, visited Matisse in his studio and saw him working on this piece. He immediately persuaded Matisse to do a deluxe portfolio of images, pblished by him soon after. Published in 1945 in the deluxe art review, Verve. This work was produced under Matisse's supervision for a special issue of Verve dedicated to Matisse's use of color, Couleur de Matisse. This is the first version of one of the most beautiful pochoirs in Jazz (published by Editions Verve in 1945 and currently offeredunsignedfor £7500 / about $13,000) and inspired it as well. Almost-invisible crease in the lower left corner (not to be confused with the acid-free mounting corner holding the print in the mat). One of Matisse's most sought-after prints. Signed and dated in the stone lower right corner. Image size: 333x262mm. Price: $3000.
